The Male Orgasm

Technically, a male orgasm is defined as the pinnacle of the sexual response cycle and is usually accompanied by a release of semen and the experience of extreme pleasure. This sensation can occur from masturbation, sexual intercourse, or other forms of sexual stimulation. In the natural sense, an orgasm does serve an evolutionary purpose as it is the means of expelling semen into a female's vagina in order to facilitate procreation.

While there is some debate as to the existence of an orgasm experienced from anal stimulation, the only proven type of orgasm comes from stimulation of the penis. This organ is the center of a man's erotic sensations and many different forms of stimulation can result in the experience of an orgasm. A multiple male orgasm is one slight variation of the primary type of orgasm. These orgasms usually happen as a series of smaller orgasms instead of a single more pronounced orgasm.

During a male orgasm, there are certain physical and psychological reactions that occur. The contraction of muscles that result in male orgasms can also trigger involuntary muscle spasms in other areas of the body as well as vocal responses. After an orgasm has been experienced, the majority of men have a refractory period where the penis loses the erection. In this refractory period, certain hormones are released that give the man a feeling of calm and relaxation. The process of orgasm is not only a physical reaction as studies have shown that areas of the brain, and limbic system in particular, are in a heightened state at the time of orgasm.

There are some specific problems that are related to the orgasm of a man. Premature ejaculation is one such problem. This is loosely defined as any orgasm that occurs earlier that desired and is usually characterized by an inability of the man to control his sexual response, thus an orgasm can happen with very little direct stimulation. There are a number of devices that can be used to treat this condition. Another problem that has received growing attention is erectile dysfunction. This disorder is when a man is unable to maintain an erection that is suitable for sexual activity. The causes can be both physical or psychological and there are many treatment options available, including medications that have shown positive results.

To fully understand the orgasm of a man, a person must also learn the differences between a man's orgasm and that of a woman. An evolutionary function has not yet been determined for the orgasm of a woman and a number of women claim an inability to reach the point of orgasm. There is a large amount of debate on the different types of orgasms by women. It is known that orgasms can occur from clitoral stimulation, but some experts also state that orgasm can occur from both anal stimulation as well as an area inside the vagina known as the G spot. However, women do not suffer from the same refractory period as men, meaning that women are more physically capable of having multiple orgasms during a sexual encounter. These differences between a female and male orgasm are thought to be manifestations of the same experience.
